The 3 Colour Rule - how to style your outfits with colour

If you haven’t noticed already I do like adding a bit of colour to my outfits. Even if I’m wearing all black.

Some women have come to me though saying they just don’t know what to wear with what? Some times it’s about proportions and sometimes it’s about actually styling what you have on. Not just wearing it.

But if you like to add a bit of colour here is an easy way to style your outfits each morning to make sure you’re not under-doing it or maybe over-doing it.

What’s wrong with this..?

This is a stock photo from one of our suppliers and geez they could have done so much better with this. Things must have been rushed that day.

So what can we say is wrong? Well a few things but the colour is very bland and pretty much it hasn’t been styled at all, It’s under-cooked. Sure the vest gives us a bit of texture but it’s missing something. What would I have done? I would have popped this on with some cropped jeans to give the vest a better proportion and kept the shoes maybe even popped a little white tee under vest. So yes we have better proportion but now we have 3 colours. Brown/White/Blue

Now the 3 colour rule isn’t necessarily a rule it’s a guide. And it doesn’t have to just be about the clothing. You can bring colour but adding a contrasting shoe or a belt or a handbag.

Here are some examples of getting it right..

If we break down we’ve got a dark navy skirt, denim jacket and a beige loafer. A perfect pairing and the shoe softens the outfit.

I love this one. It’s so simple yet effective. You’ve got your blazer and a white tee nothing ground breaking, until she popped in this khaki skirt. LOve Love Love.

Now this gets more interesting. We are really talking about 4 colours here. This outfit of the dark pant white tee and grey vest is great in its own right? But very monochromatic. The minute she added the red scarf she elevated this outfit to something great and made her outfit her own look.

This is so fun, we have two colours, white and red, but we’ve got a stripe that almost brings in the 3rd and ties it together, but then she added this bright blue bag and socks.
So very cool and a great way to wear a white skirt.

Now if you’re really hitting your stride with this little 3 colours thing. Give this a try.

We’ve got bright orange pants a blue striped shirt which elevates it rather than just plain blue and these gorgeous green shoes. You’ve got the coolness of the green and blue and added some heat with the pants. It’s perfection 😍
